Colorado Celebrates 20 Years of Stout Month

By: Katie Schroepfer

Mountain Sun20 years ago in February marked the first ever Stout Month for Mountain Sun, a Colorado based brewery. This year they are celebrating their 20 years of successful Stout Month’s with a range of new beers to offer to their dedicated fans and new-comers.

The original brewer, Jack Harris, started Stout Month in Mountain Sun’s first year of business as a way to build the business during the slower months. Three of Mountain Sun brewpubs located in Boulder and Denver will celebrate Stout Month (newly opened Under The Sun won’t be participating). The original Mountain Sun, Southern Sun and Vine Street Pub will each have 10-12 taps dedicated to Stout Month with 3-4 of them being guest beers. This year they boast 29 Mountain Sun stouts and 30 local guest beers that will rotate all throughout February.

One way they’re celebrating 20 years of business is by having all of their guest beers consist of Colorado breweries. This is their way of showing support to the local places that have supported Mountain Sun over the years.

Mountain Sun will be collaborating with soon-to-open Fate Brewing in Boulder and O’Dell Brewing in Fort Collins. Fate and Mountain Sun have collaborated together to create a Cherry Chocolate Stout that will be released on Valentine’s Day which is a foreign-export stout base beer with coca, sweet cherries and tart cherries. O’Dell’s collaboration stout is “Mutual Respect” Belgian Coffee Stout that has coffee and is fermented with a Belgian Trappist yeast strain.

Some of the anticipated stouts that will be on tap are the two collaborated stouts, BOB Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Milk Stout, Brett Stoudt American/Wild Stout, and The Kraken, an English Stout with Kraken Black Rum-Infused Oak Spirals made by this years Home brew Contest Winner.

Visiting any of the Mountain Sun locations is sure to be great for the month of February with the range of stouts on tap, and just to throw in another unique experience, they also celebrate Chop Month. Much like Movember, Chop Month is when employees and customers grow their chop-style facial hair out. At the end of February, there is a competition held for the best mutton chops around. The winner gets a Mountain Sun gift card, a quarter barrel of Mountain Sun beer and two organic pork chops. That’s reason enough to celebrate Stout Month…and Chop Month! Don’t worry ladies, you can participate too, but you’ll have to cut your hair into the best mullet possible.

Starting February 5th, every Tuesday and Friday they will have special beers released in limited quantities! To see a full list of the stouts that will be available, as well as special releases, sign up for their newsletter at
